Air Quality Problems in Fitness Centers

Allan Watson April 28, 2016     Comment Closed     Workout Tips

Given the size of fitness centers and all the people that come and go at every hour of the day, air quality problems are inevitable but this doesn’t mean that they can’t be solved. Regardless the issue, there must be a solution that will restore the freshness of the air so those going to the center will not have to face a smelly and dull air. If you never thought about this, here are some words on the air quality problems in fitness centers that will make you question how safe and healthy going to the gym really is.

The solutions

The best solution for cleaning the air and increasing it quality is the air purifier that can handle every impurity found in the air. This device does a great job in filtering the air and retaining even the smallest dust particle that can temper with its quality. Moreover, only the best air purifier for dust can minimize the health dangers in fitness centers where the air flow is high and a large amount of air needs to be cleaned. As for the humidity issues, a dehumidifier is a must if the mold problems don’t go away with simply ventilating the air. The dehumidifier absorbs the excess moisture from the air so it not only removes the risk of mold but it also helps increase the air quality. Let’s see in which cases these two devices can be of great help in protecting one’s health while exercising.

Harmful substances created by fitness equipment

Most of the fitness equipment at the gym contribute to the poor air quality because of the materials they are made of. All the plastic and synthetic leather release harmful substances into the air that you breathe deeply during every exercise. Moreover, the paint, the carpets, and the cleaning products add even more impurities to the air. Even formaldehyde is found in the air in fitness centers because of all the materials and paints that constantly release it into the air.

Carbon monoxide created by people

Fitness equipment is not the only thing that can worsen the air quality as most of the issues are caused by people going to the gym. The main concern is the level of CO2 exhaled by people during exercising, which can cause fatigue, headaches, and dizziness. Carbon dioxide levels are very high in poorly ventilated gyms where people spend plenty of time exercising and exhaling into the air. The crowds of people breathing intensely while exercising also release sweat vapors into the air, hence, the awful smell you often detect in gyms.

Air humidity issues

Mold is another serious air problem of fitness centers and not only. Mold spores develop in moist environments, which is bad enough already and can cause serious health problems when inhaled. Many fitness centers develop mold in the bathrooms and it can reach into all the rooms of the center as it rapidly spreads. Mold can cause allergies and asthma, so it should be immediately removed.
